January 31st — Start SLC Hackathon

Next week UtahWP has a table at the Start SLC Hackathon, and members will be there Thursday through Saturday. If you can come down and co-work or contribute. On Saturday morning we’ll be running a contributor day, and a first time user class to help get people up and running.

Registration

If you’re planning to come to the event please visit the Hack UTOS site and register, registration is free. We have an event on meetup to help us get an idea of numbers for the contributor day Saturday, but UTOS needs to know how many people will be attending so they can make sure to have enough food.

Up and Running Workshop

On the morning of Saturday the 31st UtahWP will be holding a getting up and running with WordPress workshop. This workshop will be to help those interested in hosting their own WordPress site get one up and running, and learn some WordPress basics. Register on this meetup event so we can get a rough number of people attending.

Contributor Day

If you’ve ever been interested in contributing to WordPress core or docs. UtahWP will be running a workshop on the morning of Saturday January 31st. Bring a laptop and learn to find a ticket, create and submit a patch, or contribute to the WordPress handbooks. Please sign up on the meetup event so we can get an idea of how many people will be attending.

Our event is part of Hack UTOS located in the north west corner of The Gateway (marked in red). The Gateway is located in the heart of Salt Lake City, Utah, along 400 West, between 200 South and South Temple.

January 28th — Chris Reynolds — CMB2: Electric Boogaloo

CMB2 is the new generation of a developer tool called Custom Metaboxes and Fields (CMB). CMB2 will help you create metaboxes and forms with custom fields that will blow your mind. Like this:

Chris will show you what CMB2 can do for you and how to use it so you never need to roll your own forms or metaboxes again.

Chris Reynolds is a WordPress developer for WebDevStudios and has been a freelance web designer and developer specializing in WordPress since 2007. He has submitted plugins and themes to WordPress.org and is the author of numerous WordPress-centric online training courses for Pluralsight. When he’s not writing code or making videos, he makes electronic music and cheers for Real Salt Lake.

December 18th — Christmas Waffles

The UtahWP group is having a christmas party this year. We are going to go hold it at the Belgian Waffle House in Midvale. If you have never been there, the waffles are amazing. Help us celebrate this great year we had by joining us Thursday the 18th.

Food will be sponsored by Bluehost, but funds are limited. If you’re planning on going please RSVP to the meetup event, so we can get a head count. If the event is full and you’d still like to join us be aware that your food may not be covered.

November 19th — Jeff Stieler — Better embeds with the Media Explorer

Using the Media Explorer plugin for better embeds from Twitter, Instagram and Youtube, adding your own services, and creatively reusing components for other purposes.

Jeff Stieler

Jeff started his WordPress journey in 2009 with Voce Communications working on projects for CBS, The Pioneer Woman, and Sony. He has contributed to the WordPress iOS app, WordPress Core, and several WordPress community plugins. Jeff has led development on projects as small as corporate blogs to large digital magazine publishing systems and now heads up the development team for Voce Platforms.

October 25-26th — WordCamp SF Streaming

Hey everyone, as you probably know this weekend is WCSF. WCSF is one of the most important WordCamps of the year. The speaker line-up is amazing. We have purchased a Live Stream ticket for our meetup to view the event. This will start at 9am (PST) and go until 6pm (PST) or 10am to 7pm Utah time. We will provide lunch and drinks(Thanks Bluehost and Mike). Feel free to bring snacks if you would like. This is an all day event but you are welcome to come for any amount of time or sessions.
